Week 2: God Gives us Boundaries

Happy to see you again! We are so glad you are here today! Turn to your neighbour and give them an ‘elbow-five!’ (It’s a ‘hi-five’ using your elbows!)

Creation: Day 2 – Sky & Water
On the second day of creation, God created the sky by separating the waters of the heavens and the waters of the earth. It says in Genesis 1:6-8,

“Then God said, “Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.” And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. God called this space “sky.” And evening passed and morning came marking the second day.”

God is so powerful, He created all these boundaries to separate all the waters here on earth and in Heaven. But did you know God did not just create boundaries for the waters and sky, but he made special ones for us too!

Wow, isn’t God amazing coming down in a huge thick cloud to talk to his people? But, did you see all the boundaries God set up before He would come down and reveal Himself? God told Moses to tell his people that they had to obey these boundaries because God had instructed them. So Moses went down and told God’s people that they needed to wash their clothes, and purify themselves (or make themselves holy) for worship. Also, God commanded Moses that no one could take even one step on the foot of the mountain or He would have not shown himself. The people of Israel followed and obeyed the boundaries stated by Moses and given by God, and for that God came down in a thick cloud, with lightning and thunder and
revealed himself to his people! What could be a better reward for obeying God than seeing him in all his power?!
Sometimes being obedient and staying within the boundaries is easy to do, but sometimes it gets hard. It gets especially hard when someone asks us to do something simple and we know we can do it but we want to be obedient and stay in our boundaries. It’s so similar to the life Jesus wants us to live! God gives us boundaries of right and wrong, and some are easier to keep than others. Some of the boundaries Jesus gives us are easy to keep, like Jesus’ command to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. But
sometimes it’s hard to obey those boundaries, like listening to and honouring our parents.
But if we are obedient and do what our parents ask of us we can get rewarded for our good behaviour, like cleaning our room when they ask, we may get ice cream, God is the same way! When you are obedient to God you are showing your faithfulness to Him. God will reward you with blessings for remaining faithful and obedient to Him by keeping the boundaries he has created for you.

Bible Verse

“Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like Him.” Colossians 3:10, NLT

The Point

God wanted Moses and the other Israelites to listen and obey Him, He was not trying to be mean. God wanted to come down and speak with His people but they had to follow special boundaries or rules in order for them to see Him.
Some boundaries God has for us are harder to keep than others, but all are possible to
keep. God will reward us for being obedient and faithful.
