Week 1: God Gives us a Fresh Start

Over the next seven weeks, we are going to be discovering a little more about our awesome God. The Bible states that God created everything – plants, animals, the air we breathe, mountains, stars, oceans, and you. Nothing that you see is a result of an accident.
You are not an accident. You are here for a purpose – for God’s purpose. God was here before it all started. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” While others may want to believe that they came from monkeys, slime, or goulash, I choose to believe what the Bible says. Everything God created has a purpose, from the creepy cockroach to the annoying bully at school. Let’s discover this amazing God together. He is our Creator!

Creation: DAY ONE – Day & Night
In the very beginning of time, God created day and night. Genesis 1:3-5 says…

“Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light ‘day’ and the darkness ‘night.’ And evening and morning came, marking the first day.”

I’m so glad that on the very first day of Creation God created evening and morning. It’s like God wanted to mark the end of something and the beginning of something new. That’s something I would like to call “a fresh start!

We just heard this amazing story about Jonah and how God gave him a fresh start after he ran away from God. Jonah didn’t want to tell the people of Nineveh about their need for God because he felt they were too wicked to have God’s forgiveness. He felt they didn’t deserve God’s love. So, Jonah fled to Tarshish – the opposite direction of Nineveh – to escape God. First, we all need to know we can never run from God. He’s everywhere and is always looking over His children. Second, God loves everyone including wicked people
like those who lived in Nineveh. We all know what happened to Jonah for disobeying God. God sent a big fish to swallow him. Jonah spent some alone time thinking about what he just did and then after three days prayed to God asking His forgiveness. God, being as cool and loving as He is, had the fish spit Jonah onto the dry ground to give him another chance. Very wisely, Jonah did exactly as God wanted him to do.

Bible Verse

“Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like Him.” Colossians 3:10, NLT

The Point

If you did something bad today you can make the next day a better day by doing good. If you did something good today you can do something even greater the next. We can do this because Jesus has given us strength and perseverance.
